Classical education is typically divided into three developmental stages of learning (trivium); grammar (memorizing), logic (formulating thought) and rhetoric (learning to discern and articulate).
A classical education trains students to revere excellent literary and historical works. The study of these works teaches students to recognize and express what is good, beautiful and true. They become proficient in speech and reason, articulating the truth in love. Classical students see all subjects as tools God created to use in their vocations as they best serve their neighbor in church and state.
Matt 28:19 commands “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” This is a very specific doctrine, which Lutherans understand as Christ’s work for us, not our decision for Him. The church is to baptize AND help parents teach. The Bible clearly directs parents to teach their children, not public schools. Just as God’s Word is unchanging, so then should their teaching about His creation remain consistent.
Time is limited and children are not born with the wisdom to discern truth. Multiple worldviews cannot “coexist”, this is why many youth leave the church for the lures of the world. This life-saving teaching should not be relegated to a couple hours a week during Sunday school and church Service.
Parents, we meet Tuesdays and Wednesdays Sept-June, we are here to help in this task, join us!
