Topic: Homeschooling Through Difficulties
Speaker: Marchauna Rodgers
Educating children is both a tremendous blessing and a potentially overwhelming responsibility. In spite of our best efforts, adding school to an already full schedule can be daunting and rarely looks like we expect it to. If you add children with special needs or a parent with health challenges, the obstacles can feel like too much. But God has called us to disciple our children, so what is a parent to do? Come hear from Marchauna Rodgers as she shares the lessons God has taught her about homeschooling through adversity. Marchauna speaks from experience, dealing with personal health struggles as well as children with special needs ranging from Asperger's Syndrome and Sensory Processing Disorder to Cerebral Palsy, developmental delays and frequent illnesses. Far from perfect (and thankful for salvation by grace), Marchauna shares with authenticity, humor, and a good dose of reality.
Marchauna began her home education experience at a very young age, when her parents got fed up, bucked the system, and brought their children home for school. Naturally, when God blessed Marchauna and her husband (of almost nineteen years) Chris with children, the decision to educate them at home was simple. After more than ten years of experience, however, both parents have learned that educating children at home is anything but simple. Still, knowing God’s call is not based on ease or simplicity, they are committed to seeing this journey through to the end, which is approaching quickly as their oldest daughter is set to begin her senior year of high school this fall. Chris and Marchauna have eight children, six girls and two boys, and are currently teaching preschool, Kindergarten, 3rd grade, 6th grade, 9th grade, 10th grade, and 11th grade, along with special ed classes, remedial reading classes, and basic life skills. In their free time, they enjoy...oh wait. They don't really have any free time, lol. Chris and Marchauna are on staff with Cru City, seeking to make sure everyone in Spokane knows someone who truly follows Jesus.
